Goal

5. Build support for expanded civic education in schools, colleges, and adult education that creates a deeper understanding of the country and of all groups in our communities, helps citizens debate public policy within the framework of America's civic values, and conveys the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for effective participation in the democratic process.

Key Resources

    League of Women Voters-The Philadelphia League of Women Voters is a major force for civic education around candidates and issues in every election. It develops curriculum related to voting and civic participation in cooperation with area schools.

    National Constitution Center-Philadelphia's premier center for civic education, with a broad range of programs for young people and adults. The auditorium and other facilities can be rented by citizen groups for events relating to public issues and concerns.

    LHistoric Philadelphia-Web site focused on Philadelpha's historic district around Independence Hall.

    Institute for the Study of Civic Values-Beyond organizing the Civic Values Campaign and managing this web site, the ISCV web site offers a wide range of articles, discussion guides, and curricular materials aimed at helping citizens play an effective role in the democratic process.

    Committee of 70-The City's well-known organization working for clean elections and government reform. Their web site is a civic education lesson in itself in helping you locate the elected officials at every level who represent you.

    U.S. History.org-A web site highlighting the wide range of historical buildings in the area around Independence Hall, including Independence Hall itself, the Liberty Bell, and Betsy Ross House.

    Pennsylvania Humanities Council- Supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Pennsylvania Humanities Council sponsors a wide range of conferences, lectures, and public programs related to American history and American values.

    I-Lead-A leadership development program that helps grass-roots leaders look within themselves and work with one another to develop the core leadership skills that will help them play effective roles in improving their communities.
