Community Partnership Program

The City of Philadelphia continues its fight against blight on a daily basis. Graffiti Abatement Teams (GAT) continue to be active in cleaning properties that have been tagged by graffiti vandals. In the past three years more than 100,000 properties have been cleaned out by GAT. In the spring of 2000, the Street Administration launched a successful allout campaign against abandoned vehicles. To date, the Police Abandoned Vehicle Unit has removed over 70,000 abandoned cars throughout our City. Expanding on the success of these and other programs, the Managing Director's Office has teamed up with various departments and agencies that will work with residents to combat blight in their own neighborhoods.

At the heart of this initiative is the Community Partnership Program. Organizations are loaned rakes, brooms, shovels, etc. to clean up their neighborhoods. Since it was started in June 2000, the program has already loaned out over 5,000 pieces of equipment to over 250 community groups. In addition, groups may also receive free paint and supplies through the voucher program for graffiti removal. Supporting these efforts are a multitude of other City departments and agencies whose activities range from cleaning/sealing abandoned housing to recruiting block captains. The only way we are going to fight blight effectively is to have the City of Philadelphia and its communities working together for a common goal: cleaner, safer neighborhoods.
